Challenges of Traditional File Share Replication

Microsoft DFS (Distributed File System) is most commonly used for file share replication (DFS-R, really). However, DFS-R was really designed to work on local area networks with Active Directory and can be problematic when replicating over wide area networks. When replication is required among branch offices, VPNs (virtual private networks) are more typically used. However, VPNs also tend to generate lots of issues. The bottom line is that both services render replication unreliable.

DFS-R is particularly bad at managing conflicts during bi-directional synchronization and there are many missing features such as version control, audit tracing, and file change histories that are not part of the DFS replication.
